Masseter Stretch For Headaches

Last post showed you an easy technique to manage headaches felt in the base of your skull, using two tennis balls.  Many headaches are also caused by grinding your teeth or chewing gum.  The Masseter Muscle, or "chewing muscle" may be the source of these headaches.
Your Masseter Muscle is located in the above location.  You can palpate it simply by running 2 fingers along your jaw line starting at your earlobe.  While working your fingers down the jaw, clench your teeth.  The Masseter Muscle will protrude into your fingers.  This is the muscle responsible for chewing your food and many times may be a trigger point, causing your headaches.  A simple stretch for this muscle is seen below.
 
Place 2 fingers on your bottom row of teeth and slowly pull your jaw down.  Do not force this motion.  You will feel a stretch in the temple area as well as the Masseter muscle.  Hold for 20-30 sec and repeated throughout the day.  This may help reduce your headaches.

Easy Way To Treat Your Suboccipital Headache: Muscle Release

Treat Your Headaches with Tennis Balls

Items you will need: 2 tennis balls, 1 sock

Position of the tennis balls will apply direct pressure to the suboccipital region without placing direct pressure on the cervical spinous processes (vertebrae)

Place the 2 tennis balls against eachother into the sock, twist the open end of the sock and fold it over the end holding the tennis balls

Lie on a firm surface with the tennis balls under the base of your skull.  You should only feel pressure on the muscle mass, not on the bony vertebrae

You may look straight up at the ceiling for symmetric pressure on either side, and you may include rotation left and right to adjust pressure to 1 side or the other


The above technique should help alleviate the suboccipital pressure and headache and should feel great!!!

The suboccipital muscles are located at the base of your skull. Their main action is extension of your head on your neck. These muscles allow you to look up.
 
Many people present with a forward head posture.  In this posture, one may present with rounded shoulders and a slumped upper back.  The ears are not in line with the shoulders, because the head is falling forward.  In order to see straight ahead, you must extend your head on your neck.  This action demands the suboccipitals to contract for an extended time, which leads to muscle shortening and trigger points.  This muscle tightness and trigger points may apply pressure to the occipital nerves.  You can see the location of the suboccipital nerves in the pictures above.  The orientation of the nerves are consistent with the location of a large percentage of headaches, especially headaches that radiate.  You may even feel headache-like pain in your eyes, forehead or temple regions. 
 
So the next time you feel this type of headache, check out your posture in a mirror.  It may be the contributing factor.

Due to leg weakness (Knee/Hip), it may be very difficult for a
trainer, therapist or caregiver to safely transfer their client/patient from one surface to another. Their client may be able to bear weight on their legs, but may not be able to advance either foot in order to take steps. This makes transferring from the bed to a chair or vice versa very difficult. The Pivot Disc is a great tool that can be used in this situation to minimize the risk of injuring your client or yourself during functional transfers.

Place client's feet on outer edge of disc with enough room between the feet for your foot





Upon standing your client, use your foot that is on the disc to control the rotation of the disc, transferring your client from one surface to another

The VMO

The VMO and The Knee


The Vastus Medialis (VMO) Muscle is one of four of the the QUADriceps Muscles.  The VMO is the "tear drop" shaped portion which provides a medial pull on the patella upon knee extension (tightening the thigh muscles).  Upon injury, surgery, or any type of inflammation/edema to the knee joint, the VMO "shuts down." It does not take a great deal of inflammation for this to occur.  Looking at the pictures below, one can see the size difference between the VMO and the Vastus Lateralis (VL).  Without the VMO pulling the knee cap medially, the VL's overbearing lateral pull may lead to other knee joint problems such as Patello-Femoral Pain Syndrome.  To "turn on" the VMO, many techniques and exercises are available.  Neuromuscular Electric Stimulation (NMES) may be applied to the VMO and Rectus Femoris to assist muscle contraction.  Tapping the VMO while performing quad exercises may also help.  Check out www.kbfitnessonline.com for specific exercises that will help correct this problem

Knee Mechanics: Down & In

Watching your client's jumping mechanics can tell you a great deal and potentially help you prevent or recover from knee injury.


This athlete presents with a "down and in" motion of both lower extremities upon jump and landing.
 
What does this tell you?
1. Your client may have overly pronated ankles or flat feet possibly due to tight gastrocnemius, soleus or subtalar joint
2.  Your client may have a tight Ilio-tibial band or Tensor Fascia Latae musculature
3.  Your client may have weak gluteus medius

How do you work with this client?
1.  Stretch the gastrocnemius and soleus
2.  Stretch the ITB/TFL and use a foam roller for deep massage
3.  Strengthen the posterior Glute Medius with clamshell or prone figure four exercises
4.  Practice the intended motion with proper technique...Work the movement pattern and the muscle timing will follow

I was contacted recently by a woman who was injured and scheduled to have her ACL repaired. She was receiving Physical Therapy from a local clinic and was paying close to $130 for each visit!
